“CHAINS” is a Bologna based hardcore straight edge outfit, one of the most exciting and vigorous scene in Italy. The band ´s fame is growing fast as their huge following, give these kids some credit and they won´t let you down. With Chains Expectations become real.
DXR) PLEASE INTRODUCE THE BAND TO DROIDX RAGE READERS, A BRIEF BIO, MEMBERS, PURPOSES AND GOALS, HOPES AND DREAMS…
Hi everyone! Here Simone I play guitar in chains, the idea of the band was born around June 2013 when me and the singer Marco used to work in the same book warehouse for a seasonal job in Bologna. We’re solid friends since 2003 so between huge stacks of books preparing long and boring orders we started talking about hardcore related stuff, like our deepest love for turning point, expensive records on discogs, justice shirts, past shows and all the chances we missed with our previous bands, so in the end we started practicing few weeks later with the main purpose of having fun, creating a brand new straight edge band putting together our main influences and the love for the classic hardcore era. After several line up changes on bass and drums, chains are: me at guitar, Marco at voice, Pier at drums and Lorenzo at Bass guitar. I think the band doesn’t have specific goals, we do our best having fun and we’ll see how far this project will lead us.
DXR) ANY PAST EXPERIENCE IN PREVIOUS BANDS FOR “CHAINS-CREWS” FELLAS ?
Loads of. Starting from me, I played guitar and sometimes even bass in many bands, but the most relevant (in no particular order) Were: Banxthis! – Inner Reason – When Seasons Change – & Jungle Fever. Marco used to sing in Banxthis! and in the legendary ED, from Bologna. Pier played for a long time since he was a kid in a pop punk band called Last Day Before Holiday and then in Jungle fever. Lorenzo is the youngest one and he plays with us and sings on a new promising band called Busted Out.
DXR) HAS THE CHOICE OF THE BAND NAME “CHAINS” ANYTHING TO DO WITH CHAIN OF STRENGTH ?
Nah not really but for sure we love Chain Of Strength, every kid into real hardcore should love them! We were looking for a short/one word name with a strong/crucial meaning you know? and chains do it right.
DXR) “ MADE FOR STANDING” THE TITLE OF YOUR BRAND NEW EP HAS ANY PARTICULAR DEPTH MEANING ?
This title comes from the fifth song of the EP called “Loss Of Balance” the song talks about a soldier trapped on a trench during a static war, so he knows that he will probably make that wrong step risking his life, but that dude is made for standing and not for running.. It’s like a metaphor that we could use for our regular life, no matter what’s happening or what could go wrong, we have to face everything with courage and integrity without hiding or running away from any kind of problem. The song is dedicated to us.
DXR) “ MADE FOR STANDING” IS YOUR DEBUT RELEASE ? HOW IS GOING THE EP SO FAR ? MANY WORLDWIDE RESPONSES ?
Nope, before Made For Standing EP we self released a demo on tape, then another 6 songs tape and a full length LP on Assurd Records. I guess well, many people told me that they really like the vibe of the new songs in the EP and I also saw some good reviews in a couple of webzines.
DXR) ANY VINYL LIMITED COLORED WAX FOR RECORD “NERDS-MANIACS” COLLECTORS ? INDEED IS ANY IN THE BAND A VYNIL OR T SHIRTS COLLECTOR ?
Yes, there are 3 different colors, the most limited to 100 copies is a very cool dark brown, the other 2, 200 copies each, are clear and green. We’re really proud about how the record came out, Thomas from Farewell Records has been awesome, he did a perfect job, the covers, the layout and the details got a really high quality, I love it, we couldn’t be happier. Easy, everyone in the band is into records and shirts but me and Marco beats everyone eheh, we print our merch by ourselves as well in Marco’s garage with his screen printing machine. Recently Marco has fallen a little bit behind with collecting records because he’s started collecting books and war memorabilia so it seems like that it’s time for me to steal him some rare stuff eheh.
DXR) WHAT DO YOU THINK AND TRUELY FEEL ABOUT THE INCREASE OF BAND´S REUNION SHOW/TOUR ? ISN´T THIS TREND GOING TOO FAR AND KIND OUT OF HAND ? AT ME SOUNDS LIKE THAT THERE´S NOT MUCH NEW GOING ON OR NEW BLOOD PUMPING IN THE HARDCORE SCENE, PRETTY SAD…
Umm tricky question, I don’t know, I’m not a big fan of reunion shows in general but at the same time I think that those classic bands like YOT, Judge or Bold etc.. To me and for a lot of people they’re eternal, I spent countless hours listening to their albums on recorded tapes with my walkman when I was a teenager going to school, so every time they come to Europe If I have some money to spend to travel I try to go to see them even knowing that they can’t play as they used to do in the late 80’s… Anyway it’s a good chance for young people into hardcore to see a piece of history, staying at home for them would be a big mistake. For sure in Italy I don’t see any new young straight edge band, what’s wrong with this new generation? I would really like to see even just one band with 4 crazy and angry kids playing raw stuff but with that flame burning inside like we used to do back in the days.. This is pretty sad.
DXR) IS “CHAINS” DEFINITELY A STRAIGHT EDGE BAND ?
Yes Chains are a straight edge band. Me and Marco are long time friends and when we met each other in 2003, we were both already into straight edge so now after almost 15years we are 2 old edgeman. Our drummer Pier got into punk/hc at a very young age, studying drums since he was12/13 and got into straight edge in 2012. Then he moved to London on January 2016 so for obvious reasons he can’t play all the shows with us but he has recorded all the records except for the demo and he tries to play as much as he can, especially for weekends and festivals. During these years he has become one of my closest friends, I also played bass on his pop punk band for a couple of years before they broke up, and as a musician I never played with a such talented drummer. So It’s a big pleasure to have him as a friend and obviously as a drummer but when he can’t make it, our friend Andrea replaces him. Andrea played with me and Marco in Banxthis! and WSC too, now he’s not really into hardcore stuff anymore but he’s still a good drummer and he loves wasting his time with us ahaha It’s a real luck to have him ’cause without his help we couldn’t play that often. Lorenzo is our little brother and after many people on bass, with him we finally found our guy that fit perfectly in the band, he got a strong edge attitude, he loves Slapshot and camo pants, we couldn’t ask for more.
DXR) YOU GUYS GOT YOUR OWN PARTICULAR SOUND, KINDA DIFFERENT FROM THE GENERAL HARDCORE STRAIGHT EDGE CLICHÉ AND I CANNOT REALLY LABELS IT AS YOUTHCREW OR WHATEVER, NO ANY OTHER BAND CAN REALLY BEING COMPARED TO YOU, PAST OR PRESENT, MIGHT SAY MODERN TIGHT HARDCORE, WITHOUT ANY METAL INFLUENCE (POSITIVE THING), WOULD SAY IN THE VEIN OF EARLY REACT! RECORDS STUFF, AM I RIGHT ? DO YOU AGREE ? ANY HIDDEN INFLUENCE BETWEEN THE LINES GUYS,OR ANY LOVED BAND ?
Yes it’s hard to say just a couple of bands that remind our sound, maybe because we just try to play in our own personal way not pretending to sound as a specific band from a specific era. Anyway we’re huge Turning Point fans, also Supertouch and Underdog are definitely on our top 10, of course the classic like YOT, Bold, Judge.. With a particular mention for the sound from Cali like UC – Hard Stance – Beyond – Unity – Against the Wall and Insted. About more recent bands I can say that Boston’s heroes like Stop & Think, Mental and RJ are for sure big influences. Me and Marco also used to be (and still are) big Justice fans, both collecting their records and shirts.
DXR) BOLOGNA ALWAYS HAD A LEADING ROLE IN THE PUNK-HARDCORE SCENE BACK IN THE DAYS, HOW THINGS ARE GOING NOWADAYS ? IS STILL BOLOGNA ON THE RISE ? ANY BONDS WITH THE CHARISMATICS HARDCORE STRAIGHT EDGE BANDS FROM THE PAST SUCH AS IVORY CAGE-SUMMER LEAGUE-GUILT SHOW AND WITH THE VETERAN OLDSCREW LOCAL SCENESTERS ?
Yeah I think that it’s a town with a reasonable weight on the Italian scene, there are some squats and venues with big stories to tell about what happened inside their 4 walls. In the last years we’ve been lucky to have many US bands playing here, with a great response of people. So the town has regained some fame as a hardcore-punk city after some quiet years. As the bands you mentioned I was definitely a summer league fan, I started listening to some hc-punk and alternative music in general on 1999 and I remember well the first time I saw SL playing, it was on May/June 2001 and at that time I was almost 17, and seeing them was like a shock! My mind started going crazy trying to elaborate all these new things that i was looking/discovering in front of me! I remember that I thought something like: “oh shiiit! one day I wanna play like them!” They paved my way into hardcore for sure. It’s crazy to think that just some weeks later that SL show I saw also Shelter playing during the tour of “The Purpose The Passion”, that night I was wearing a black “Better Than a Thousand” shirt and Ray said to me inside the venue: “Hey hi!” but I was too young and too shy to start talking, so I just said, with a big smile on my face “Hey!” ahahah those years were magic for a kid like me! I also got some nice memories of crazy shows at “Atlantide” (the most famous and the best squat in Bologna, R.I.P.) with a lot of good bands, even ED where Marco used to sing have had a big impact on the punk-hc history of the city.
DXR) ARE YOU GUYS INTO SKATE-SNOWBOARD-SURFING OR ANY ALTERNATIVE EXTREME SPORT ?
Marco is still into skateboarding! From 15 to 18 I was a skater too but with no big achievements, i still have a board but I’m kinda scared to use it eheh guitar was definitely better for me. We both played soccer as well, and we both like trekking. Until last year I’ve been playing baseball for five years in the team of my town. Pier and Lorenzo are not really into sports I guess.
DXR) TELL ME ABOUT YOUR LYRICS, SEEM KIND ON MORE PERSONAL TOPICS , NOT TOO MUCH IN THE “YOUTHCREW” STEREOTYPES, RIGHT ?
Yeah that’s right, Marco usually writes lyrics more on personal stuff or about his life experiences. He’s cool, I like his way to write lyrics, they’re particular and catchy at the same time, he’s able to hide nice meanings and values inside the songs, don’t ask me how he does it!
DXR) DOES ANY IN THE BAND “X” BRAND ON STAGE ?
Usually no one, but I always have my X-rated on my left wrist!
DXR) ANY UPCOMING TOUR FOR “CHAINS” ON SHORT SIGHT ?
We’ll play some Italian shows on May and June opening for Burn in Bologna as well, then we’ll play a little weekender on Germany with a nice festival in Karlsruhe with a lot of cool bands (including our friends in Knightzz & Tetro Pugnale, we’ll hit the road together I guess) on August 12th called “kids will have their say fest 3”.
DXR) ANY PLAN FOR THE VERY NEXT FUTURE SUCH AS A FULL LENGHT 12 “ LYING IN THE CLOSET ?
Nothing scheduled yet, but I already got some ideas on my mind and we would really like to work on another full length, we’ll see!
DXR) ANY MERCHANDISING AVAILABLE FOR YOUR FANS, DUDES ?
Not at the moment, just sometimes we put some leftover shirts from shows on a tictail webstore page. Anyway you can check the farewell records store and grab our new EP with also a limited shirt! Check it.
DXR) DO YOU WANNA ADD A STATEMENT OR ANYTHING ELSE FOR DROIDXRAGE READERS, REMEMBER THIS MAG IS A WORLDWIDE PLATFORM, WITH A HUGE FOLLOWING, SO TAKE ADVANTAGE FROM IT FOR SPREAD YOUR WORD AROUND….
Thanks a lot for the interview, it’s a real pleasure to be here. Check out our stuff if you haven’t done it yet and don’t be shy, we’re crazy Italians but we’re not so bad. We would like to play more shows in Europe so book us! I want to say thank you once again to Thomas from farewell records and all the people has supported us along the way. “Dedicated to all the kids who cares enough to make tomorrow a brighter day… Let’s make a change!” cit.
