COMBATANT

COMBATANT 2015 demo came out fall 2015 and I wasn’t able to cop one of these awesome tapes back at the time, to be honest I just ordered a copy from S&A because I got in touch with Tyler who sings in the band and it reminds me that I did not own a copy yet. This is a tape I really like. This is definitly some kind of straightforward hardcore punk for those who share the same tastes than me, these six songs are sharpened as fuck and without compromise, with an old school vibe. I was pretty curious about what Tyler could tell me about his band because there’s not much info on the Internet, hope you’ll like this!

YOUTH FOR THE YOUTH: THE REAL COST

Here’s an interview with Sam, Austin, Texas THE REAL COST’s singer, a young lad which seems to be pretty enthusiast to answer to the following questions and that’s pretty much why I enjoy writing interviews: realizing bands love playing music and chatting with ease about their bands and lifestyles! THE REAL COST is a youth crew band with a fucking old-school vibe and that’s really cool!

XWASTEX

Here is Sweden latest straight edge hardcore band I’ve been listening to lately – XWASTEX from Göteborg. They just put out this really cool six-songs demo tape; raw riffing style, heavy breakdowns and intense mosh parts, what could be more more natural than adding some extra pissed/rabid singing? Great demo, thanks Alexis (Offside Records) for the hook-up!

@chrisxcreations interview!

Here’s another interview for this column inspired by the people I follow on Instagram. Meet Chris X, you probably have already listened to (BURST OF RAGE, NYC VELOCITY, LIBERTY, COUNTDOWN…) but he’s also a very talented graphic/visual artist, and that’s the main reason why I decided to ask him a few questions about his work and lifestyle.

Enjoy!

A TRIBUTE TO 1988: AN INTERVIEW WITH JEFF, JOHN & STEVE FROM UP FRONT

upfront

(Jim Eaton, Steve Keeley (SK in the interview), Jeff Terranova (JT) and Jon Field(JF))

A few months ago Ed did this great Smorgasbord Records column for the website and, if you are used to read some of the stuffs I post here you already know my year 1988 passion, when UP FRONT released their first LP “Spirit” on this same record company run by UF members. To me, this year is really fascinating concerning hardcore punk History because when I have a conversation with older pals who are into hardcore since the early days (around 1981/1982) and who aren’t straight edge (I mean, some of them could have been non-smoking or non-drinking individuals) they sometimes believe 1988 was the celebration of the “fall” of hardcore punk mainly because of the explosion of straight edge/youth crew bands and their almost puritan lifestyles and values you could red about reading the lyrics of their songs. It is not about the fact people decides not to drink or use drugs, it’s more because they remind how some straight edge “gangs” were intolerant towards other people, other bands. Plus, youth crew bands are known around the Internet because of their “positive lifestyle”, whereas some of nowadays younger straight edgers are definitely into some “you drink, you suck” mentality, which isn’t “posi” at all in my humble opinion. I was born in 1988, started listening to hardcore punk in the early 2000s, I just DON’T GIVE A FUCK about people’s choices and I don’t like to waste my time with stupid and boring people, whether they drink, smoke or do drugs. Life’s too short for constantely searching for the Truth or the right people to hang out with. Some people are interesting, including Steve, Jeff and Jon (former UP FRONT members) who nicely answered to my questions a few months ago. Thank you guys!

SPLITKNUCKLE

SPLITKNUCKLE is the very first hardcore/beatdown band I’ve been listening to in AGES. I must admit I really dislike this kind of music but I was surprised by the among of people linked with UKHC bands mentionned in DROIDxRAGE, some of them have already answered to interviews here, who seemed to be fond of this band. That’s the main reason I wanted to ask them a few questions, and also because this EP “Nothing Left Unsaid” is a pretty cool record!

SOCIETY ABUSE

I did this interview with singer Tyler a few months ago; SOCIETY ABUSE comes from Jacksonville, Florida, they released “No Pleasure” demo in 2014 and their ST 7″ on Mind Rot Records on 2015. Watch out: this band is part of the new breed of American hardcore punk bands, mixing elements of 80s Boston/NYHC with an incredible energy and dedication to traditional hardcore spirit!

2015 HONORABLE MENTIONS

by Jean

(part 2 of my personal 2015 top releases)

Here’s part 2 of my 2015 top releases.
I decided to articulate the remaing parts of this classification in no specific order, but three different rankings including:
1): hardcore/punk/metal (the one you’re about to read)
2): 90s indie/post-punk/garage,
3): the outsiders (I will publish these columns in several weeks I guess. First because I think the entire subject would be too “massive” otherwise, and also because I have a pretty busy schedule these days!)

Although it’s early 2016 and I’m sure you’ve already dug into 90% of these releases I wanted to share these words with you, especially these lines dealing with non-hardcore releases because some of the bands/artists involved in this column agreed to tell me their thoughts about their production and their connexions with hardcore punk. I’d like to thank them for their contribution to this column. Thanks to all the other bands mentionned here for the great work they did.

AXIS

interview with Dylan (guitar)

by Jean

AXIS reminds me what was very popular when I got into hardcore in the early 00s. Something really chaotic, similar to metal but flirting with different emotions, bands like CONVERGE or COALESCE were at their peak at that time and dozens of bands all around the world were trying – unsuccessfully if you want my opinion – to copy ’em. I’m not anymore in that kind of music but I’ve seen many blogs and people sharing this record on social networks and it TO-TAL-LY rips! Check it out!
