One of the piece of merch I want the most might be the Youth Crew 88 shirt by YOUTH OF TODAY. Aside how critical I can be about this kind of hardcore I love so much, well I do love it a lot, and all the sketchy side linked to it too. Let’s face it, there’s something really conservative in this type of music, with the attitude and what’s linked to it, the fact it screams for changes but it still comeback to be the same things done by the same type of people, the violent mosh and the violence at shows that began somehow there, the collector factor, that made a JUDGE records the most expensive record of Discogs.

But I can’t deny all the positive sides it brung. First of all, The Straight Edge, and it’s already a huge thing. Even though I’m more close to a 90’s uber PC vision of it, FLOORPUNCH kept me focus all this time. Also, the naive and always too much positive way of thinking, which is more than important since in the world as we know it, you gotta find a way to get a grip, and listening to a good old INSTED records can’t be more motivating. The empowring feeling it can give. The way it shaped the sound of hardcore, and one can’t deny it matters since we’re still talking about music (more or less). And the list can go on.

With all this torn past, Youth Crew hardcore made its own way, still surviving the times and giving birth to another band every now and then. It’s not very perfect and neither changed its own defects, but at least it’s trying and it is still giving me chills when I’m listening to it, urging me to be the spark to lit the light of society. During the last few years, React! Records put out some really crucial records in the genre, so much that I can’t even pick one up. Amongst them, you can find BREAK AWAY last effort so far. Well, honestly, it took me time to be into it. I can’t really explain why but it bugged me for a moment. As time flew away, I decided to get back to it and there was it. I finally found what I wanted out of this records. So brace yourself, because we’re putting back FLOORPUNCH to the front. Do you remember hardcore ?

BARGE – interview w/ Jean-Pierre

by xjtx

BARGE first 7″ on Vinyl Conflict Label is amazing (so is their demo). That band sums up everything I ever like concerning 1982/90 era of hardcore punk: the fury, the frustration, sharped lyrics (“Fuck you and your guilty pleasures that you never will admit You’re doing it all fucking wrong How can you just look at me and say you support this shit?”, “We as humans live for shit We can’t get enough of it Live for pain”, “You think that I don’t know the truth Don’t open your mouth, there is no use […] God fucks you…”)… BARGE sounds like a lovely INFEST/SSD crossover if you want my opinion, a band full of anger. It seems weird when you realize singer Jean-Pierre is actually a really nice human being!

Not Of This Earth : Mark McEwen – Fire And Ice

By Tieuma

I can’t count how many times I’ve said I’ll write down this interview I did with Mark next monday, since I recorded it four month ago. Not that I didn’t want to do it, but sometime when I take a look at my schedule, I just feel like I’m the most unorganized person ever. Which was also confirmed in this interview because, for an obscure reason, it’s in two parts and one of them parts is half recorded, so for the forty minutes we talked, I only got twenty five minutes.

At first I thought about not posting it, because it seemed useless to have only half of an interview, but after listen through it a couple of times, I realised it wasn’t that bad, since the part I lost was only about shirts and whatnot so maybe for one time we can squeeze through without talking about merchandising. Crap, after reading this I also feel predictable.

Last two things : thanks to Overreact for taking me with them, and a thought to Carl Edward Demola, because Fire And Ice owe The Icemen their name, rest in peace. And now let’s get to it.

FRIEND OR FOE

Well I have to admit I’m currently in another mood… To be clear, and perfectly honest, I’ve been focusing on different things than the usual ones, hardcore and shit, blah blah… WOWOWOW, do not panic: I’m still straight edge, animals are still my friends and I don’t wanna eat them nor slaughter them… It’s just… Actually… Well, just take a look to my mp3 player’s playlist:

Processed with Moldiv

Yeah.
(This dude is a nerd, bro)
To be honest, I’m still waiting for my recent orders from Reaper Records and Straight & Alert. That’s pretty much why I’m not into hardcore by the moment, I’m like a drug addict without his methadone program… Thus, I try to change my mind with other stuffs: I’m watching a lot of movies, I take time to study my DROIDXRAGE co-workers Warhammers posts on Instagram – actually one of my pals in Bordeaux live near a Games Workshop, and he recently buy several boxes because he was in a nostalgic mood, I guess…

Anyway, I’m still listening to (a bit) of hardcore punk…

Let’s go to the point: FRIEND OR FOE. Of course, they took their name from AGNOSTIC FRONT’s song which is kind like a hymn: even NoFX covered it on their 2010/2011? Covers EP. This song, this band name can best sum up the whole concept behind the NYHC scene: this is a street style of music, not a political conscious or focused kind of music, maybe it sounds too “male chauvinist” to you if you’re into another style of hardcore punk but that’s a spirit I love since I’m 12 or 13…

Here is a bunch of fellows from Richmond, Virginia (featuring in various acts such as FIRE & ICE, BRACEWAR, TOUGH LUCK and UPPERHAND – I’ve actually never listened to any of them but it seems that FIRE & ICE benefits from an increasing reputation with modern hardcore audience according to the Internet…). They started playing together under the name FRIEND OR FOE in 2011 and, according to their Facebook page they’re fond of 90s NYHC or tough hardcore punk (SICK OF IT ALL, 86 MENTALITY, BREAKDOWN, KRACKDOWN, (DOWN, EASTBOUND AND DOWN, UP AND DOWN…) MURPHY’S LAW, DYNAMO, COLDFRONT…). They have a bandcamp page and, according to that bandcamp page, it seems they already released two EPs, “Know Your Rights” and “Outsider”. Frankly speaking, I have to admit these recordings do not satisfy my ears: I think it too much reminds me of S.O.I.A. post-“Blood, Sweat and No Tears” era (well, theIR entire discography actually) from 1991 to nowadays… But I also have to admit their live performances are just AWE-SOME!
